It’s Eastertide!
This joyful season is a continuation of our celebrations from Easter Sunday. For seven weeks each year the church observes a season of Eastertide. The scriptures focus on the resurrection stories of Jesus.
I grew up in a low church tradition: no robes, no liturgical seasons, lectionary scriptures, or seasonal colors in the sanctuary. The worship order was the same nearly every week of the year:ย three or four hymns, two prayers, passing the offering plate, sermon, invitation, benediction. Lunch!
We thought our pastor was really shaking things up when we started observing four weeks of Advent leading up to Christmas. Iโd heard of Lent as a child, but never practiced it until I was in college.
All this to say, I thought Easter was just one day of the year.
When I joined a church in Louisville, Kentucky, while I was in seminary I got a better education about the church calendar and seasons of the year, which follow the life of Jesus. My church and the seminary experience itself, helped me to understand Easter is more than a day. It is a full season.
Once you learn something like that, itโs hard to remember what it was ever like not to know it. The journey of learning to be a minister, pastor, spiritual leader, or activist is full of moments of learning something big and new. Very quickly, however, those big new things must stick in a way that allows you to forget that you ever didnโt know it.
Easter season, or Eastertide lasts for six more Sundays. The season of Pentecost begins on June 9, and it continues for close to six months. We also celebrate a little Easter every Sunday of the year. And being a follower of Jesus invites us to practice resurrection on every day of our lives.
This weekโs Three Minute Ministry Mentor episode is about practicing resurrection.
Here is a link to Wendell Berryโs Manifesto: Mad Farmer Liberation Front. Heโs the writer and poet who first introduced me to the idea of practicing resurrection.
Here are some questions for your Eastertide:
* What new thing have you learned lately?
* How are you practicing resurrection today? This week? This season?
